Chillable Hours

For When You Should Be Working

Throw Me!

Let us start by saying that we have no idea why games like are so addictive, but they definitely kept the crew here at Chillable Hours coming back again and again.

Much like the beloved Toss the Penguin games, Throw Me challenges you to throw a strange object as far as possible. After the initial toss, you can gain speed by hitting certain clouds and by hitting cranes at the bottom of the screen.

Our highest score so far is 75,000, which is tantalizingly close to putting us on the daily leaderboard.

One thing that we have become obsessed with is figuring out how high we can get our toss in the air. So far the highest we have gone is about 7,500 feet. At about 5,000 feet you see background that includes the words “Thor Gaming”, at about 6,000 feet you see background that says “Pretty High” and at 7,500 feet you see background that says “Almost There”.

Since we would compete over just about anything, we immediately want to know what “There” is in the “Almost There” background. Is there a ceiling? Is there something so unbelievably cool that it must be seen? Maybe…maybe not. But we have to know.

Please let us know if you find out - just leave it in the comments below.

Feel The Beat

It’s Friday and we can’t wait for the weekend.

To kill a few Chillable Hours on this Friday afternoon, we have been playing Feel The Beat, a game in the mold of Guitar Hero, but without the guitar and the well-know songs. Feel The Beat is still a pretty darn fun game and we have been challenging our co-workers for the last few hours to see who can get the highest score before we cut out early for the weekend.

Trivia World

A loyal reader of the site - whitebreadforprez - sent us a link to Trivia World. I am not sure if “whitebreadforprez” also happens to be one of the creators of Trivia World (since it looks like the site just recently went live), but if so we want to congratulate him/her/it on a job well done.

Trivia World has two main games - the Trivia Table and Brain Ball. We played Brain Ball for a short amount of time, and it basically is a one-player game in which you try to answer trivia questions to rack up as many points as possible (a little boring for our liking).

On the other hand, we have become somewhat obsessed with Trivia Table and have been playing non-stop since receiving the link yesterday. Trivia Table is a trivia challenge game in which you virtually sit around a table with 1-8 other people and try to beat out other players across the Internet in a trivia challenge to the death (ok, not really, but players do get knocked out of the game after missing two questions).

The best part about Trivia World seems to be the prizes. The player with the highest score on Trivia Table this month wins a Wii. Since the site is fairly new, it seems as if any fairly enterprising person could play Trivia Table on a good amount over the next few weeks and win the Wii (before more and more people come to the site, making winning a little harder).

You do have to register - and yes, we too hate registering on sites to play - but it is a quick and simple email and password register.

Let us know what you think in the comments below.

DUI - The Game

One of our loyal readers, K&EChiTown, sent us “DUI” which is somewhat similar to the game “Totem Destroyer,” which we posted a few days ago.

DUI has a total of 36 levels and has caused some of the folks at Chillable Hours to enter into a bet to see who can complete all of the levels the quickest and become “the greatest of all time.” Sorry, I don’t have further information, but they have simply informed me that the winner of the bet will be “the greatest of all time.”

Thanks for the link K&EChiTown, it is much appreciated.

Grid 16

Grid 16 is a unique game that is actually composed of 16 smaller games. The goal is to play each of the games for as long as possible. I know that that sounds boring… and long - but it’s not. You only play each game for 5-7 seconds at a time and the speed of the games is continually increasing.

The instructions are curiously simple:

Hand on arrow keys. Use your gaming logic. Do not panic.

If you don’t immediately know how to play one of the games, you can look at the top of the game screen for an additional instruction like “keep the ball bouncing” or something similar. In the interest of full disclosure, while we instinctively knew how to play a few of the games, we had to play some of the games a few times just to figure out how they are played.

The best part of Grid 16 is that at the end of the game you get a screen showing your stats for three categories: prioritizing, timing and reflexes.

Good luck and let us know how skilled you are in the comments below.

Totem Destroyer

A unique game that challenges you to keep a light-bulb-looking object balanced on a set of bricks, while removing all of the bricks one by one. It is Jenga-esque in a way.

We had a good time wasting a few Chillable Hours on this one, but wished that it had more than 25 levels. Hopefully the creators will pass along some additional levels in the future.

Pentago

Pentago is an interesting new board game with the feel of a centuries-old challenge. The goal is to get five of your colored marbles in a row. Once you place a marble, you must rotate one of the four smaller sections of the board. While it may seem easy at first, the challenge is obvious once you start playing.

One interesting feature on the site is the ability to play via email with friends. When choosing to compete in an “email challenge,” an email will be sent to your opponent after each turn.

Let us know what you think of Pentago in the comments below.

Are you a Genius?

So….we are not really sure if scoring well on this test will qualify you as a “genius,” but it is fun nonetheless.

For most of us, the game became a little bit of trial and error at the end, but we saved our passwords and made it to the end. Let us know if you need help and we might just post (or email) some of the passwords to begin at more advanced levels.

Good luck, and let us know how you did in the comments section below.

Hitori

Hitori is a type of logic puzzle that is somewhat similar to Sudoku puzzles. A few of our friends are addicted to the game and insist that we share it with any looking to spend a few Chillable Hours exercising their noggins.

From Wikipedia:

Hitori is played with a grid of squares or cells, and each cell contains a number. The object is to eliminate numbers by filling in the squares such that remaining cells do not contain numbers that appear more than once in either a given row or column.

Filled-in cells cannot be horizontally or vertically adjacent, although they can be diagonally adjacent. The remaining un-filled cells must not be isolated from the rest of the grid by filled-in cells either vertically, horizontally or diagonally.

The site that we have linked has a couple of different levels available for those who like to play with a little extra help and for those who are Hitori masters. The linked site also has a few strategic tips that may help you understand the game.

Let us know what you think of Hitori in the comments below.

The 80’s Game

With questions about The Cosby Show, the Beastie Boys and tight-rolling your pants, The 80’s Game is a great way to spend a few Chillable Hours testing your knowledge of the 1980’s.

We chose to only play the free version of the game that is available online, but would be interested in hearing from anyone who downloaded the full version.

Who knew that Pat Riley coined the term “Three-Peat”?

Bowman

Bowman is another classic game in which you try to correctly aim your player to shoot another player. It is kinda like the Tanks game that we posted yesterday, except instead of firing missiles from a tank, you shoot arrows from a bow.

Bowman is a very simple game, and has been around for a while, but we still enjoying playing. An oldie but a goodie.

Geography Quiz

One of our loyal readers, WILEYone, sent us a link to National Geographic’s GeoBee Challenge over the weekend. The GeoBee Challenge is a daily quiz of 10 geography questions that will test even the biggest Geography nerds.

We always thought that we were pretty good at these types of quizzes, but have yet to break the 50% mark in any of the quizzes that we have taken so far.

Let us know how you did in the comments, and let us know about any other good trivia-esque games out there that we can add to the site. Thanks to WILEYone for the link. Click on the graphic below to play.

Tanks

Tanks is a classic time-waster game that can easily take up a few hours of you Monday morning or afternoon.

The goal of the game is easy - shoot the other tank before it shoots you. We prefer to aim with the smaller bullets and then bring in the heavy artillery for the kill once we have zeroed in on the other tank.

Seek

One of our favorite game creators - eyemaze (aka, the guys who made the Grow games) - has just released a new game entitled Seek. I am not sure if this game is for everyone - if you play, you will have a stack of pink hearts on your computer monitor - however, we love eyemaze, so we wanted to post it.

Seek is fairly simple game and can easily be played while you are also doing “real work” - call it multitasking. All you have to do is click the letters that appear on conveyor belt - if you are too slow, or if you click the wrong letter, one of your hearts will be wiped out

Stained Glass

Stained Glass is an interesting puzzle game from one of our favorite sites.

The game seems simple enough - all you have to do is place the tiles in the open window so that they match on all of the sides. Once you get a few of the tiles initially placed correctly, it is easy to fill in the remaining tiles. As for getting the initial pieces in correctly… that is the tough part - and it doesn’t get any easier as you move on to high levels with more tiles.

As always, let us know how you did and what you think of the game in the comments below.

TypeRacer

TypeRacer is a very cool game that appears to have just made it to the Internet.

The self-proclaimed “first online typing arena” is pretty damn fun and unbelievably addicting. The crew at Chillable Hours has been challenging all of our friends to friendly (and often, not-so-friendly) typeoffs.

TypeRacer also gives you the option to compete against other typers online, which is incredibly addicting. When you lose, you have to play again, and when you win, you have to prove to yourself (and the other anonymous racers) that you are not a fluke.

TypeRacer works best with non-IE browsers, which is just another reason to download Firefox or another non-IE browser.

Let the race begin!

Filler

Ahhh…. Mondays. Gotta love ‘em.

One of our loyal readers - TheHeftyLefty - sent us a link to the game posted below last Friday and suggested that we add it to our site. Thank you TheHeftyLefty.

The game is very simple and can easily be played while on a conference call, while your supposed to be studying or when you should otherwise be working.

A few instructions:

Mouse down to create a circle.
If a bouncing ball hits the circle, you’ll lose a life.
Release the mouse to place the circle.
This version is time-locked and will go dead after 5 minutes of play.

As always, let us know how you did in the comments below.

Free Rice

FreeRice is a great way to spend a few Chillable Hours and support a good cause at the same time.

FreeRice has two goals - (1) Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free and (2) Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

Improving your vocabulary is a great investment in yourself and the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive, is even greater. Somewhere in the world, a person will be thankful for the rice that you helped provide on FreeRice.

Help end world hunger

Domino Pressure

We can’t quite figure out why we are strangely addicted to Domino Pressure, but have found ourselves playing it throughout the day when we just don’t feel like doing real work.

The game is very simple, you just try to click on the domino that will knock all the others down, ending with the final domino smashing a tomato.

Simple enough, eh? Now if we could just figure out why it is so damn addicting.

Our best score so far is level 21, let us know how you do in the comments below.

Our Trivia Team is Movin’ On Uhhh-uhhhh-p

We always knew that we had smart readers, and now we have proof. Our trivia team has moved up to 7th place on the list of “Top Companies” on TriviaFanatic.com!

We are closing in on GENOME DATA SYSTEMS in 6th place and while they sound pretty smart, we are confident that we can overtake them in the next few days.

We appreciate all of you who have already signed up and are playing for the Chillable Hours team, and we hope that you will tell all of your co-workers, classmates, friends and enemies to join our team.

To join the Chillable Hours team, click on the link below and go to “Play.” Then just enter “chillablehours.com” after clicking on “join Company.” Yes, you do have to create an account first, but it is free and just requires a username and password (we hate sites that require login too, but this one is definitely worth it).

Grow Island

Grow Island is another game in the “grow” series of games that we truly enjoy here at Chillable Hours. We are not really sure what all of the instructions are (because they are in Japanese), but to win, you have to click and drag all of the items along the bottom of the screen into the middle of the screen in the correct order. When the items are picked in the correct order, your island will grow to its fullest.

Good luck and let us know how you did in the comments.

Mahjong

Mahjong is a favorite of the Chillable Hours crew because no two games are exactly alike and you can easily play a quick game when you need a short break.

While there are thousands of Majhong sites out there, we particularly like the graphics at this one, as well as the multiple game layouts that are available.

Click on the picture below to play and let us know how you did in the comments.

P.S. Turn down the sound before you click on the link above unless you want your neighbors to know that you are not working.

The Chillable Hours Trivia Team!

We want to send a HUGE THANK YOU to all of our readers that have joined our trivia team and put the Chillable Hours team into 11th place on TriviaFanatic.com. We have already passed some pretty impressive teams, and only have a few more before we get to the top.

This is pretty amazing considering we have only been on TriviaFanatic for a few days. We don’t have far to go before we get into the top 10 and we think that we can get into the top 5 in the next few weeks.

PLEASE continue to play and PLEASE continue to forward this post on to your friends so that we can move the Chillable Hours team up the rankings.

To join the Chillable Hours team, click on the link below and go to “Play.” Then just enter “chillablehours.com” after clicking on “join Company.” Yes, you do have to create an account first, but it is free and just requires a username and password (we hate sites that require login too, but this one is definitely worth it).

Hapland 3

The third installment of the Hapland series of games provides a happy medium between Hapland 1 (too easy) and Hapland 2 (too hard). The instructions are as simple as the instructions to the other Hapland games and are as follows:

Mix up a haptacular magic potion, open the third and final portal and declare yourself Grand Saviour of Hapland.

If you get stuck, look for extra things to click on. You can often still do things while stuff is still happening. Just how long do alien abductions take, anyway? Remember, walkthroughs are for losers.

Let us know how long it takes you to complete.

It’s Friday Afternoon - I Need Something To Do

If you can’t leave the office early today, we hope that you can spend a few Chillable Hours playing this deceptively simple “Shot” game. The game looks easy and the directions are simple - “Drag and move a ball, so it hits another ball” - but it gets pretty damn complex quickly.

JOIN OUR TRIVIA TEAM!

One of our favorite ways to log Chillable Hours is with trivia contests - however, we have had a tough time finding a good trivia site that is challenging and enjoyable at the same time.

We think that our search is over. We have found TriviaFanatic.com, which not only has a great set of trivia questions, but also allows users to compete individually, by school and by company.

We now also have a mission - to have the Chillable Hours team at the top of the leaderboard.

If you want to join the Chillable Hours team and watch it move up the “Company” rankings, just enter “chillablehours.com” after clicking on “join Company.” Yes, you do have to create an account first, but it is free and just requires a username and password (we hate sites that require login too, but this one is definitely worth it).

The Invisible Beard of Contemplation (Part Two)

Riddles, riddles and more riddles. The Invisible Beard of Contemplation is a game that challenges players with a number of interesting riddles, each of which must be solved in order to move on to the next level.

The directions to the game are simple - just insert the answer to the riddle in the blank space at the bottom of the screen. You can save your progress, which is a good thing, because there is no way that anyone is finishing this game in one sitting.

A few tips to get you started:

1. Open a second Internet tab - because you will need Google’s help to complete many levels
2. The answer to the first riddle is the name of a snake that includes the name of the mathematical function shown in the riddle. You can search Google for “Popular Great Britian Snakes” if you need more help.

Feel free to add tips to the comments section below.

One of the most popular games we have posted so far was the World Map Game.

Hapland #1

One of our most loyal readers, TTJacob, emailed us to tell us that the Hapland #2 game that we previously posted was a good time waster, but “too f-in hard”.

To satisfy Mister TTJacob, as well as any other readers who had problems with the Hapland game we previously posted, we now give you Hapland #1 (which is a much easier game).

As always, please let us know how you did and how much time you wasted doing it.

A Tribute to Grow

We have received great feedback from our readers with regard to the Grow series of games that we have posted recently, so we decide to post “Industrial Zombie’s Grow” which is a tribute to the original series of Grow games.

One of our readers - three-el - suggested this game, so we want to make sure to say thank you to three-el. Also, as a side note, we have been getting some great suggestions from our readers via the “Contact Us” page, so we wanted to send a big shout out to everyone that has sent us suggestions so far - we look forward to seeing your suggested posts up soon.

We enjoyed this tribute game to the Grow series, but also feel as if it shows just how hard it is for the Eyemaze team to keep producing quality games. This one is alright, but we don’t think it is quite in the league of the real Grow games.

You think you are soooo smart - the Mensa Workout

Over the last few days, we have really seen an increase in the number of posts, links, etc., from ChillableHours.com on other websites. Along with almost every one of the posts comes a litany of comments from readers bragging about how well they did on the World Map test or the No Clue Crossword Puzzles.

So now, we have decided to post an item that will be a true test of our readers’ wits - the Mensa Workout.

Mensa is an organization formed by a bunch or smarties that according to their own website:

“provides a forum for intellectual exchange among members. Its activities include the exchange of ideas by lectures, discussions, journals, special-interest groups, and local, regional, national, and international gatherings; the investigations of members’ opinions and attitudes; and assistance to researchers, inside and outside Mensa, in projects dealing with intelligence or Mensa.”

A few instructions for the Mensa Workout:

You have half an hour to answer 30 questions. Answers to the questions and discussion of the answers are provided at the time you submit your answers. While there is a 30-minute time limit to take the test, the amount of time you actually take in no way affects your final score. This is due to the differences in transmission times on the internet, and server loads. If you have metered access to the Internet, once the Mensa Workout page is fully loaded into your browser, if you wish, you may disconnect from the Internet. When you have completed the test, you can then reconnect to submit your answers and receive your score.

As always, and especially on this one, let us know how you did in the comments.

World Map Game

Since the days of “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego” - we have always been obsessed with games that challenge our ability to locate various random countries across the globe.

We found the game linked below and can not stop playing it. Admittedly, it is INCREDIBLY hard and we can’t seem to get a score above the 40s, but we keep coming back for more.

The game linked below can be played in a few quick minutes, and is excellent when you need a short break from what you should be doing.

Mahjongg

One of our favorite time wasters of all time at Chillable Hours is Mahjongg Solitaire.

Mahjongg is a great distraction when you just need to take a short break from whatever you should be doing.

While there are a million sites out there with difference Mahjongg games, we like the one linked below because it allows you to change the setup of the tiles and keep track of the number of moves you have made in a game (which is good for betting with your friends). The site also allows you to undo moves and click the “hint” button to show you any moves that you may be missing.

It’s pretty easy to learn to play - just click on the “help” button and you can figure it out in a few minutes.

Curveball

Curveball is a simple but addictive pong-like game. The first couple of levels are pretty easy once you figure out how to play, however, the levels get exponentially harder as you move up.

Adding curve when you hit the ball makes it easier to beat a level, but trying to do so makes it harder to hit the ball.

Let us know how you did in the comments.

Hapland 2

Since we got a pretty good response from everyone with our “Grow” post, we have decided to post a similar game for all to enjoy.

Hapland 2 is another game that requires you to click on various items on the screen in a certain order to “win” the game.

Hapland 2 notes that to “win” you must - “Restore power to the portal in order to…. save a princess or something. Just light the damn torches.”

The site is also nice enough to provide a few tips, which are as follows:

1. Sometimes helpful symbols are engraved on the walls.
2. Click on everything! No, really, everything. Even that thin pink thing that doesn’t look like it does anything.

This one is a little more involved than the Grow games, so you may want to save it for an extra-long conference call or lecture.

Click on the picture below to play and let us know how you did in the comments.

Prepare to Ignore Your Work

One of our loyal readers sent me a fantastic link that caused me to simply ignore all of my responsibilities for a good portion of the work day. After reading our post on Nintendo8.com, DaleC sent us a link to the Virtual NES. After a few hours of playing Paperboy and Major League Baseball, I had to physically move away from my computer to avoid spending the entire afternoon searching all of the games on this site.

Virtual NES is Jay-Z to Nintendo8’s Soulja Boy. In fact, we have taken out the links in the Nintendo8 post, because there simply is no reason to go there after discovering Virtual NES.

If you grew up in the 80s or played the original NES, you will quickly become addicted to Virtual NES.

Thank DaleC later for this great submission and prepare to not do whatever you had planned for the next few hours.

Grow!

Grow is one of our favorite games. The instructions (and the game) seem simple enough - they are as follows:

1. Click panels in your selected order.
2. Items you click will grow and grow with each turn.
3. You will complete the game when all panels’ level is max.
4. They effect each other as they grow.

This one looks easy, but looks can be deceiving!

We would love to hear how quickly you guys finish this one - it took us about 30 minutes.

In addition to playing against others online - you can challenge friends and co-workers to a battle of the brains.

A good walk spoiled

When not logging Chillable Hours in the office, a good way to log a few Chillable Hours outside of the office is on the golf course. There is nothing better than getting up on a Saturday or Sunday morning (or leaving the office early on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday) and getting in a round of golf with a group of good friends.

A few things can make a round even better, like crushing a 300-yard drive, sinking a long putt or winning a few bucks off your buddies.

Unfortunately, a few things can also make a round frustrating, such as slow AARP members in the group in front of you, losing over a two dozen golf balls in one round or a slow beer cart.

I am always trying to get friends to join me on the course, even if they have never played before. I tell people that even if you have never swung a golf club, anyone can drive a golf cart with reckless abandon, make fun of other people’s bad shots and complain about their bosses and co-workers (all things that make a round of golf wonderful).

Below are a few clips that can help even the newest golfer - the first clip introduces a few basic mechanics (sorry for the quality of the vid) and the second is a tad bit more advanced…

___________________________

And if you can’t get out of the office - you can always challenge your friends to a round of mini-putt (or kill a few Chillable Hours playing solo).
