One of the annual publications that we always find to be interesting/hilarious/overly-relied upon are the Vault law firm rankings.
Well…you can all breathe easy now as the 2009 Vault rankings were just published.
While there has been much written about the waning usefulness of the Vault rankings, they remain a guide for many law school students trying to decide which law firm they want to bless with their presence during the upcoming summer.
The crew at Chillable Hours is not a huge fan of using the Vault rankings for anything other than acting snobbish toward others and have actually logged a good chunk of hours over at ConsusRankings.com, which has a huge and incredibly helpful database of law firm and law school rankings.
The takeaways from this post - (1) if you work at Wachtell you are much better than if you work at Cravath, and (2) visit ConsusRankings.com if you really are looking for a helpful way to compare law firms and law schools.

One of our loyal readers, K&EChiTown, sent us “DUI” which is somewhat similar to the game “Totem Destroyer,” which we posted a few days ago.
DUI has a total of 36 levels and has caused some of the folks at Chillable Hours to enter into a bet to see who can complete all of the levels the quickest and become “the greatest of all time.” Sorry, I don’t have further information, but they have simply informed me that the winner of the bet will be “the greatest of all time.”
Thanks for the link K&EChiTown, it is much appreciated.

Linked below is a very interesting (and thorough) article from PrawfsBlawg on the top three law schools - Harvard, Yale and Stanford.
The article is written by Professor Jason Solomon, a Columbia grad, which hopefully removes some level of bias from the article.
From his conclusions, Professor Solomon ranks Stanford as the best, Harvard in second place and Yale a distant third.
Very interesting stuff, we would love to hear what you guys think about Professor Solomon’s analysis and conclusions.

Pentago is an interesting new board game with the feel of a centuries-old challenge. The goal is to get five of your colored marbles in a row. Once you place a marble, you must rotate one of the four smaller sections of the board. While it may seem easy at first, the challenge is obvious once you start playing.
One interesting feature on the site is the ability to play via email with friends. When choosing to compete in an “email challenge,” an email will be sent to your opponent after each turn.
Let us know what you think of Pentago in the comments below.

So….we are not really sure if scoring well on this test will qualify you as a “genius,” but it is fun nonetheless.
For most of us, the game became a little bit of trial and error at the end, but we saved our passwords and made it to the end. Let us know if you need help and we might just post (or email) some of the passwords to begin at more advanced levels.
Good luck, and let us know how you did in the comments section below.

Hitori is a type of logic puzzle that is somewhat similar to Sudoku puzzles. A few of our friends are addicted to the game and insist that we share it with any looking to spend a few Chillable Hours exercising their noggins.
From Wikipedia:
Hitori is played with a grid of squares or cells, and each cell contains a number. The object is to eliminate numbers by filling in the squares such that remaining cells do not contain numbers that appear more than once in either a given row or column.
Filled-in cells cannot be horizontally or vertically adjacent, although they can be diagonally adjacent. The remaining un-filled cells must not be isolated from the rest of the grid by filled-in cells either vertically, horizontally or diagonally.
The site that we have linked has a couple of different levels available for those who like to play with a little extra help and for those who are Hitori masters. The linked site also has a few strategic tips that may help you understand the game.
Let us know what you think of Hitori in the comments below.

One of the sites that we previously posted on Chillable Hours was Five Thirty Eight, an electoral projections site that was created by a sports stats junkie. Needless to say, the site is filled with an amazing amount of statistical data about every facet of the upcoming Presidential election.
We have been feeling a little out of the loop since Hillary conceded the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama, and the Presidential race has drifted from the lead story each night on the evening news. So, even though we are supporters of Senator Obama, we were pretty surprised when we visited fivethirtyeight.com and saw that Obama is predicted to win the electoral vote 309-229.
This site is a great Monday morning/afternoon distraction from getting back to work after a long holiday weekned. We have logged a few Chillable Hours this morning just poking around and looking at a slice of the massive amount of info on the site.
A few sections that we want to direct your attention to are the “Scenario Analysis” section a few scrolls down on the right-hand side of the webpage (which could be an election source for a multitude of wagers - not that we encourage that) and the state-by-state analysis of the Presidential race located a few scrolls down on the left-hand side of the webpage. While we find it somewhat disheartening that Five Thirty Eight predicts that there is a 4.61% chance of a recount in a decisive state, we are encouraged by the 25% chance of an Obama landslide (more than 375 electoral votes).

Stained Glass is an interesting puzzle game from one of our favorite sites.
The game seems simple enough - all you have to do is place the tiles in the open window so that they match on all of the sides. Once you get a few of the tiles initially placed correctly, it is easy to fill in the remaining tiles. As for getting the initial pieces in correctly… that is the tough part - and it doesn’t get any easier as you move on to high levels with more tiles.
As always, let us know how you did and what you think of the game in the comments below.

Ahhh…. Mondays. Gotta love ‘em.
One of our loyal readers - TheHeftyLefty - sent us a link to the game posted below last Friday and suggested that we add it to our site. Thank you TheHeftyLefty.
The game is very simple and can easily be played while on a conference call, while your supposed to be studying or when you should otherwise be working.
A few instructions:
Mouse down to create a circle.
If a bouncing ball hits the circle, you’ll lose a life.
Release the mouse to place the circle.
This version is time-locked and will go dead after 5 minutes of play.
As always, let us know how you did in the comments below.

Fivethirtyeight.com is a fantastic political site that has an incredible amount of information about the Presidential race in November and a number of predictive polls that are updated almost daily. It is hard to truly describe the site, but the FAQ section of the webpage offers the following:
How is this site different from other compilations of polls like Real Clear Politics? There are several ways that the FiveThityEight methodology differs from other poll compilations. Firstly, we assign each poll a weighting based on that pollster’s historical track record, the poll’s sample size, and the recentness of the poll. More reliable polls are weighted more heavily in our averages. Secondly, we include a regression estimate based on the demograhics in each state among our ‘polls’, which helps to account for outlier polls and to stabilize the results. Thirdly, we simulate the election 10,000 times for each site update in order to provide a probabilistic assessment of electoral outcomes.
If you are a political junkie, this is one that you truly have to check out for yourself. We did so for the first time about two weeks ago, and now it is in the daily rotation. Click on the image below to visit.

If you can’t leave the office early today, we hope that you can spend a few Chillable Hours playing this deceptively simple “Shot” game. The game looks easy and the directions are simple - “Drag and move a ball, so it hits another ball” - but it gets pretty damn complex quickly.

Have you ever thought that you were smarter than the guy in the office next to you?
Well, of course you are…. and now you can objectively prove it.
The “International High IQ Society” has posted two IQ tests on its website that provide the perfect opportunity for you to find out how you measure up (and to brag about it to those around you). The tests include a basic IQ Test and a “Test for Above Average Abilities” - both of which are 36-question timed tests featuring six subtests: analogies, math, factual knowledge, memory, sequential reasoning and analogical reasoning.
We had never heard of the “International High IQ Society” but a bit amount of information from their website provides some insight. The site notes:
The International High IQ Society takes what’s best about the golden age of the intellectual salons—tolerance, moral engagement, and faith in the free play of ideas—and applies them to a contemporary setting.
The Society is an egalitarian community full of opportunities for its members to share the life of the mind, unencumbered by the restrictions of physicality.
As always, we are interested in hearing how all of our readers stack up against the competition and against each other. To that end, we would appreciate hearing a little about you in the comments below (e.g., school, age, location, bank, firm, business…. whatever) and how you did on the two tests.

One of our favorite ways to log Chillable Hours is with trivia contests - however, we have had a tough time finding a good trivia site that is challenging and enjoyable at the same time.
We think that our search is over. We have found TriviaFanatic.com, which not only has a great set of trivia questions, but also allows users to compete individually, by school and by company.
We now also have a mission - to have the Chillable Hours team at the top of the leaderboard.
If you want to join the Chillable Hours team and watch it move up the “Company” rankings, just enter “chillablehours.com” after clicking on “join Company.” Yes, you do have to create an account first, but it is free and just requires a username and password (we hate sites that require login too, but this one is definitely worth it).

If you are like us at Chillable Hours, you often feel like you should send someone a thank you card or a get well card or something other type of greeting card, but you really just don’t want to put in the effort to walk to a store to buy the card.
As a result, you usually end up sending an Ecard. Unfortunately, whenever you go to one of the usual suspects for online greeting cards, they only have a very few and VERY cheesy free ecards (and you are not going to pay a few bucks for an emailed greeting card).
Someecards.com is a fantastic alternative to sending out lame Ecards. In fact, we have been sending out Ecards to our friends and enemies all morning because this site has some seriously funny stuff. They even have some hilarious TGIF and memorial day weekend cards.
Check it out. Send to all those around you. Let us know what you favorite Ecards are in the comments section below.

We’ve tried to tell you before, but it’s over.
We know you keep claiming that you are winning the popular vote, but unfortunately your “Hillary Math” is a little off-base. Even if you count the popular vote in Florida, Obama is still winning the popular count by about 150,000 votes. You are ahead in the popular vote if Michigan is added, however, OBAMA WAS NOT ON THE BALLOT IN MICHIGAN. Arguing that you are winning the popular vote is like me arguing that I beat Michael Jordan in one-on-one last night - he didn’t play, but I did make eleven quick layups to give me the victory.
For anyone that is tired of hearing Hillary brag that she is winning the popular vote, check out the actual numbers via Real Clear Politics in the link below.

Slate.com has devoted four full days of articles to the art of procrastination. What better way to procrastinate than to spend a ton of time reading twelve articles about procrastination.
Some of the articles are spectacular and some are less than spectacular, however, all of them provide an excellent chance to log a few Chillable Hours.
We have previously heard of some great ways to procrastinate, include new favorites like playing frisbee golf with closing CDs and old faves such as Gunner Bingo.
Let us know your favorite ways to procrastinate - this is valuable information that should be shared with all of the readers of ChillableHours.com.

The USC Trojans have received quite a bit of bad press lately from the O.J. Mayo scandal, however, this definitely has not been the first blemish on the Trojans’ record.
One of our loyal readers - TommyC - sent us the following link to a story on Bruinsnation.com that includes a truly impressive amount of information “regarding the scandal, criminality, investigations, embarrassing incidents and other assorted black eyes that have plagued USC since Pete Carroll’s tenure began six years ago.”
We don’t want to say that USC may play a little fast and loose with the rules, but will instead let all of you make your own judgments after reading the linked story. Click on the picture of O.J. below to go to the story…

We would love to hear what you guys think about USC and their recent “issues” in the comments below.

Over the last few days, we have really seen an increase in the number of posts, links, etc., from ChillableHours.com on other websites. Along with almost every one of the posts comes a litany of comments from readers bragging about how well they did on the World Map test or the No Clue Crossword Puzzles.
So now, we have decided to post an item that will be a true test of our readers’ wits - the Mensa Workout.
Mensa is an organization formed by a bunch or smarties that according to their own website:
“provides a forum for intellectual exchange among members. Its activities include the exchange of ideas by lectures, discussions, journals, special-interest groups, and local, regional, national, and international gatherings; the investigations of members’ opinions and attitudes; and assistance to researchers, inside and outside Mensa, in projects dealing with intelligence or Mensa.”
A few instructions for the Mensa Workout:
You have half an hour to answer 30 questions. Answers to the questions and discussion of the answers are provided at the time you submit your answers. While there is a 30-minute time limit to take the test, the amount of time you actually take in no way affects your final score. This is due to the differences in transmission times on the internet, and server loads. If you have metered access to the Internet, once the Mensa Workout page is fully loaded into your browser, if you wish, you may disconnect from the Internet. When you have completed the test, you can then reconnect to submit your answers and receive your score.
As always, and especially on this one, let us know how you did in the comments.

One of the recent hot issues constantly being discussed at colleges, universities and law schools is whether or not students should have Internet access during class.
The crew at Chillable Hours thinks that students should be able to access the Internet in class if they so choose, unless they are distracting other students and/or the teacher. In fact, many of us agree that Internet access was one of the main things that we relied on to stay awake during particularly boring classes.
Unfortunately, it seems that many others do not agree with our point a view. A number of schools are disabling WiFi in classrooms and using other actions to deter Internet use during class (for example, the article below notes that UCLA Law School professors have a “kill switch” that they can trip at any time during a class if they desire).
One of our favorite law professors, Professor Bainbridge, has recently discussed this topic on his website. A link to a recent post on ProfessorBainbridge.com is linked below.
Read the Full Article on ProfessorBainbridge.com
We think that more and more colleges, universities and law schools are going to limit or eliminate Internet access in response to professor complaints and wishes. We don’t think this is the best idea - but would like to hear what our readers think.
Let us know in the comments below.

One of our favorite time wasters of all time at Chillable Hours is Mahjongg Solitaire.
Mahjongg is a great distraction when you just need to take a short break from whatever you should be doing.
While there are a million sites out there with difference Mahjongg games, we like the one linked below because it allows you to change the setup of the tiles and keep track of the number of moves you have made in a game (which is good for betting with your friends). The site also allows you to undo moves and click the “hint” button to show you any moves that you may be missing.
It’s pretty easy to learn to play - just click on the “help” button and you can figure it out in a few minutes.

It’s a great time of the year to read about all things politics, unfortunately, it is almost impossible to find a website or political pundit that isn’t completely biased toward the candidate or party of their choice and who doesn’t completely slant every story they print.
Real Clear Politics is one of the best sites that we have found for a somewhat unbiased and independent view on American politics. RCP is updated every morning and throughout the day. It is a great site to check as soon as you get into the office in the morning when you can’t quite get motivated to start working.
From the RCP website:
RCP culls and publishes the best commentary, news, polling data, and links to important resources from all points of the political compass and covering all the important issues of the day. RealClearPolitics has become a trusted filter for anyone interested in politics.
Let us know what you think.

RottenTomatoes.com is a great resource to use when quickly trying to decide what movie to go see and/or rent on a Friday night. RottenTomatoes collects reviews from critics around the globe and posts them all in one central location - it also separates the reviews from the most well known sites and reviewers under a separate “Top Critics” tab. RT’s “Tomatometer” also gives readers an overall rating of a movie based upon all of the reviews for that movie.

Curveball is a simple but addictive pong-like game. The first couple of levels are pretty easy once you figure out how to play, however, the levels get exponentially harder as you move up.
Adding curve when you hit the ball makes it easier to beat a level, but trying to do so makes it harder to hit the ball.

We here at Chillable Hours give the people what they want.
A few of you commented that The Real Estalker was too Los Angeles/Hollywood focused and asked us to put up a site that covered celebrity and high-end real estate in other cities.
So…..we bring you Big Time Listings. Big Time Listings covers homes primarily in New York, but also in other parts of the U.S. One of the best things about BTL is that it categorizes celebrity homes in a number of interesting categories, including by city and by what exactly makes the buyer/seller notable, including whether they are an artist, a fashionista, a music icon, a resauranteur or a sport star (among others).
Big Time Listings is updated a few times a day and is another site that you can check out when you only have a few minutes to read the most recent posts, or a few hours to look through the archives.
Real estate sites are a favorite of the The Chillable Hours team, so if you know of any good sites, drop us a line and let us know.

The Real Estalker is a great blog on celebrity and high-end real estate sales and purchases written by a blogger affectionally known as “Your Mama.” The blog is updated a few times a day and provides a voyueristic insight into the lives of celebrities and the well-to-do.
We also enjoy “Your Mama’s” writing style and the amazing amount of knowledge and gossip that she has (and shares) about the properties and persons she profiles in her posts.
The Real Estalker is another one of those sites that you can peruse daily when you have a few extra minutes and/or just don’t want to pay attention to what you should be doing.
A quick description of the Real Estalker from the site is below, followed by a link to the wonderfulness.
Let’s face it, for better or worse, we as a culture are obsessed with celebrity and celebrity lifestyle. We all want to know where they go, what they wear and who they’re sleeping with. And of course, where they live. This blog is focussed on who lives where, who’s buying and selling and for how much. Enjoy. But children, have some sense. Do not knock on any of these doors. These people do not need you ringing their bells and tripping their security. Seriously.
Let the stalking begin!

Slacker.com is a free, customizable online music player. Slacker has a number of preset stations that cover various music genres and artists. However, one of the greatest things about Slacker is how easy it is to customize your own radio station that only plays the artists you select. While you do have to provide an email address to login, it is free and we have not received any spam email from the site.
You can also instantly save any songs you are listening to directly to your personal Slacker library, but you need to be a “premium” member to do so (which means $10 bucks per month). Chillable Hours has yet to sign up for a premium account since we are pretty pleased with our free non-premium account - and we think you will be too.
One word of warning - the songs are uncensored, so make sure you are aware of who may be in earshot when blasting the Eazy-E.

Since we got a pretty good response from everyone with our “Grow” post, we have decided to post a similar game for all to enjoy.
Hapland 2 is another game that requires you to click on various items on the screen in a certain order to “win” the game.
Hapland 2 notes that to “win” you must - “Restore power to the portal in order to…. save a princess or something. Just light the damn torches.”
The site is also nice enough to provide a few tips, which are as follows:
1. Sometimes helpful symbols are engraved on the walls.
2. Click on everything! No, really, everything. Even that thin pink thing that doesn’t look like it does anything.
This one is a little more involved than the Grow games, so you may want to save it for an extra-long conference call or lecture.

One of our loyal readers sent me a fantastic link that caused me to simply ignore all of my responsibilities for a good portion of the work day. After reading our post on Nintendo8.com, DaleC sent us a link to the Virtual NES. After a few hours of playing Paperboy and Major League Baseball, I had to physically move away from my computer to avoid spending the entire afternoon searching all of the games on this site.
Virtual NES is Jay-Z to Nintendo8’s Soulja Boy. In fact, we have taken out the links in the Nintendo8 post, because there simply is no reason to go there after discovering Virtual NES.
If you grew up in the 80s or played the original NES, you will quickly become addicted to Virtual NES.
Thank DaleC later for this great submission and prepare to not do whatever you had planned for the next few hours.

Anyone that grew up in the late 80’s or early 90’s probably had an 8-bit Nintendo - you know the old grey box with controllers that only had start, select, x and y buttons. Now you can play any of the classic Nintendo games on Nintendo8.com - including Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda, Tetris and Double Dragon.
Maybe not the most mentally stimulating website out there, but definitely a blast from the past, and c’mon, we all need to do something when we are supposed to be listening to conference calls.
Also, Nintendo8.com works best with a Firefox browser, which you should definitely download if you have not already. Chillable Hours is a big fan of Firefox and suggests that all of our readers download it from www.firefox.com.

TMZ.com is a great celebrity gossip site that can lead to one logging scores of Chillable Hours. TMZ is updated often from Monday through Friday and includes videos and stories about the lives of various celebrities and pseudo-celebrities around Hollywood.
This site can be quite addicting and unless you are careful, you will soon find yourself knowing more about who Jessica Simpson is dating than anyone should ever know. TMZ is undoubtedly entertaining and can quickly become a guilty pleasure.

One of our favorite legal professor blogs here at Chillable Hours is ProfessorBainbridge.com. We recently ran across the linked post below and were amused and kinda frightened at the same time. Since a few of us graduated from law school, we can appreciate the humorous side of these exam instructions while also fully understanding how incredibly stressful law school exams can be to law students.
Professor Bainbridge has some great insights and is quite diligent about keeping his site updated regularly. Here at Chillable Hours, we are pretty big fans (even if we don’t always agree with his political positions).
In addition to checking out the Best Exam Instructions Ever posted below, we encourage you to peruse the entire site and spend a few Chillable Hours with Professor Bainbridge.

Fark is a truly fantastic site that is a great way to log many, many Chillable Hours. And leave your 7 year old daughter at home.”
Fark is updated hundreds of times weekly and provides a constant flow of material, which will inevitably lead to any reader quickly accumulating large amounts of Chillable Hours.
In addition, the best part about Fark is that it has thousands of loyal and witty readers who are quick to post comments on all of the linked items, which are often the best part of any post.

I think most people remember JibJab from their “This Land is Your Land” animation clip starring George Bush and John Kerry from a few years ago. However, I recently stumbled across their website again and have spent more than a few Chillable Hours perusing its pages.

A few of my favorite sections of JibJab include the “jokebox” - which includes thousands of funny videos, photos, audio clips and text passages. The site has a few hundred contributors, so this section if frequently updated with new material.

JibJab’s “sendables” include a number of funny videos that any user can edit by pasting the faces of friends and families to create some pretty hilarious “non-crappy eCards.”

After posting “A good walk spoiled” earlier this week, a good friend pointed us to a great site for Yahoo members that will help you figure out and track your handicap.
Yahoo’s HandicapTracker lets you keep a record of the rounds you’ve played and calculates your handicap rating based on your scores. You can track your golf game in as much detail as you want - enter only your score for the round, or record your hole-by-hole performance, including such details as whether your drive hit the fairway or how many putts you took to hole out.
The site also allows you to create or join a group to monitor how well your friends are playing and to make sure they are not sandbagging when you guys are playing for money.
